Joseph Buckmaster

A native Californian, was educated in Whittier. Graduated from Whittier High School in 1917 and Whittier College in 1924.

Lettered in four sports at Whittier High School, football, basketball, baseball and track.

Lettered in five sports at Whittier College, football, basketball, baseball, tennis and track.

Inducted into the Whittier College Sports Hall of Fame.

Ventura Junior College 1934-46

Athletic director at Ventura Junior College 1946-1948.

Among his many achievements as a coach was winning the Metropolitan Conference Football title in 1935 and 1937 and six Ventura League titles in Basketball.

Burt Davis

Born and educated in Fillmore.

Played four years on the Fillmore High School basketball team and one year on the football and track teams.

Upon graduation in 1905 he began five decades of officiating and worked more athletic events than any other person in County history.

A respected official in football, basketball, baseball, softball, and track.

Also officiated in collegiate games and professional football exhibition games.

Served as Secretary – Treasurer for the Channel Coast Officials’ Association, the Southern California Basketball Officials’ Association and Southern
California Baseball Officials’ Association.

Refugio Flores

A native of Mexico, Flores was educated in Oxnard elementary schools, Channel Island High School, and Oxnard College.

With an early interest in Wrestling he become involved in Karate training.

In 1977-1979 he was a member of the Oxnard All-Stars Full Contact Karate Team with an 8-0 record.

In 1977 he won the California Amateur Kick Boxing Championship.

In 1979 he won the World Karate Association United States Featherweight Kick Boxing Championship.

In 1981 he won the International Kick Boxing Association’s World Featherweight Championship.

Had an 11-O amateur record and a 23-2 professional record.

Flores has coached and trained World Class Champion Karate and Kick Boxers.

Donald Lang

Graduated from Ventura High School in 1932, and Long Beach Junior College in 1934.

Played baseball and basketball at Ventura High and was a manager for the football team.

Participated in baseball at Long Beach Junior College and in 1935 joined the Pros as an infielder, signing with the Los Angeles Angels, playing that year with the Catalina Island Team.

Played on numerous teams around the Country including Ponca City, Oklahoma, Cincinnati Reds, Indianapolis, Newark, Kansas City.

In 1946, after four years in the Armed Services, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox and assigned to Louisville (AA).

In 1947 he was purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals and assigned to Columbus, Ohio (AA) where he batted .346.

He returned to play with the Cardinals in 1948 when they finished in second place in the National League.

Against left-handed pitchers he batted in the clean-up spot between cardinal stars Stan Musial and Enos Slaughter.

The 1949 season was divided between St. Louis and Columbus of the American Association.

He played our his long career with the San Francisco Seals in 1950 under the management of Frank “Lefty” O’Doul.

Dr. Philip Philbrook

1923 graduate of Oxnard High School, lettered in track.

Attended USC. Dental School and practiced dentistry for 53 years in Oxnard.

A member of the Camarillo Rifle Team.

A member of the California State Rifle Team for 15 years.

In 1933 he was State Rifle Champion.

In 1941 at the National Championships at Camp Perry, Ohio, he made a record score that still stands – 484 out of a possible 500.

At Camp Perry, Ohio, he also won the Distinguished Rifle Badge for high individual and team score.
