Marvin “Mo” Hodges

Born June 4, 1916 in Gardner, Kansas

Competed two years varsity basketball and football at Gardner High School. Named “All-County” for both sports in junior and senior years

Earned letter in track at Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa, 12 letters in football, baseball, basketball and track at Baker University, Baldwin City, Kansas, from which he graduated in 1943

NAVAL CAREER

Gun Captain aboard USS Arizona from 1935-38.

Represented Arizona on its football, basketball, baseball and rowing teams

Re-enlisted in 1944 and given special commission as Ensign. Served in Pacific for two years.

Assigned to Seabee Base in Port Hueneme in 1946 and served as Athletic Officer

Released from active duty in 1947 and named Athletic Director for Port Hueneme base.

Returned to active duty in 1950, served one year in Japan. Discharged in 1951

COACHING CAREER

Coached Port Hueneme SeaBees basketball and baseball teams during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.

Won the 11th Naval District Basketball Championship in 1953-54 season

Managed Oxnard Babe Ruth teams, 1955 & 1956

Served as coach for Oxnard American Legion team

OFFICIATING CAREER

Thirty-five-year career officiating basketball, football, and baseball in Ventura County

Named in 1951 and served 20 years as a Channel Coast Officials Association Instructor

Inducted into the Baker University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981

Dave Marquez

Born September 18, 1931 in Santa Paula, California

Competed in track at Santa Paula High School. Named team captain and ran undefeated in senior year. Established records in 120-yard low hurdles and 70-yard high hurdles.

Born August 4, 1954 in Ventura, California

Competed two years varsity football and track at Buena High School, Ventura, California. Named to All-CIF team as kicker and All-Channel League 1st Team
offense & defense, named to California High School Football Team by Helms Athletic Foundation

Competed two years varsity football at Ventura College as defensive back, safety, and kicker. Third in nation in interceptions, named Junior College All-American and First Team Western States Conference on offense & defense 1974

Competed two years varsity football at Stanford University as kicker, punter, and back-up safety.

Named to The UPI All-West Coast and PAC-8 Teams as kicker 1976

Head coach in four major sports at Odea High School, Seattle, Washington

Head Coach at Ventura College 1950-52 — won the Elmer Prosser Perpetual Trophy in 1951 with a 21-6 football victory against Compton College

Coached baseball, golf, gymnastics, junior varsity basketball at Ventura College

Named Physical Education Department head at Ventura High School in 1953. Served as division head and department head for Ventura High School Intramural Department

Coached in all major sports programs from 1953 until retiring from teaching and coaching in 1979

Robert Shoup

Born February 24, 1932 in Lincoln, Nebraska

Won 14 athletic letters at Muir High School, Pasadena, California, in football, baseball, basketball, tennis, and swimming

Associate Arts Degree from John Muir Junior College, Pasadena, California. Elected Student Body President 1952.

Earned Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from University of California, Santa Barbara. Led football team in total offense and to the 1955 CCAA Championship. Played every position but catcher for UCSB baseball team and led team in batting

Earned Master’s Degree in Physical Education from University of Southern California 1960

COACHING CAREER

Twice named Coach of the Year at North Hill High School, Torrance, California. Won total of six league championships in football, baseball, and tennis

Under his guidance, California Lutheran University football teams have won 13 NAIA District 3 Championships in 17 years

The Kingsmen have appeared in playoffs five times, winning the NAIA National Championship in 1971

His football teams were listed in the Top Ten winningest football teams over the past 50 years with a 182-81-6 record

Has coached 32 NAIA Division Il Football All-Americans

Fifteen of his collegiate stars have entered professional football
