University of Wyoming BS 1958

COACHING CAREER
Sandy Williams began her coaching career at Simi Valley High School in 1965 where she was an assistant coach with the cross country team. The team competed in AAU meets as there was no organized high school competition for girls. The team won two State championships and placed 7th in the Nationals. Sandy also coached the girls’ track and field team. She helped organize the
Seawind League, an unofficial league, which instituted games for girls in several sports. Sandy moved to Royal High School in 1968 and continued to coach cross-country and track and field and became the girls’ athletic director. In 1973 the CIF Southern Section officially recognized girls’ sports and track and field was the first sport to take part in CIF play-offs. Sandy had a large contingent of Athletes at that meet, and at every CIF meet after that. Many of her track athletes placed in CIF and state meets and in 1975 her team was the Southern Section CIF Champions. Sandy continued as the girls’ athletic director until 1988 and as the track and field coach until 1990. Her teams had more that 100 dual meet wins, six league championships, and were CIF champions in 1975. Sandy was chosen three times as CIF Southern Section Honor Coach at the State Meet, in 1976, 1978, and 1988.

COMMUNITY
Sandy has been devoting most of her professional life to developing and progressing high school sports for girls in Ventura County. She was an active member of the California Women’s Coaches Academy, which worked to get the CIF to recognize girls’ sports, allow them to join existing leagues and have play-offs. She served on numerous advisory boards and committees to help integrate girls’ sports as part of an overall sports program. In 1973 Sandy became the first League Coordinator for the Marmonte League and served until 1987. She feels that her greatest contributions came while she was serving as Marmonte League Coordinator and League Representative at the Southern Section CIF.

During this time, the opportunities for girls went from no sports to full inclusion in CIF.
