George Hurley

Born: May 17th, 1948 in Taft, California

Cal Poly SLO 1971 – BA History, minor Math
Cal Poly SLO 1978 – MA Education

As an all league player at Taft Union H.S., George accepted a Football scholarship and started for three years on the offensive line at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He was an all conference player in both 1969 and 1970 and was hired to coach at Newbury Park H.S. in 1972.

During his career he has also coached Basketball and Baseball but he has earned his fame as a Wrestling and Football coach.

In 1984-5, his Wrestling team placed second in the State, the highest level ever reached by a Ventura County team. He also refereed Wrestling for twenty-five years including several CIF finals.

In Football during his nineteen-year career as Head Coach, his teams won 130 games, a mark still in the top ten all time Ventura County coaching record list. His teams won seven Marmonte League championships, went to the CIF playoffs eleven times and participated in two CIF final games. In the 1993 CIF Finals game versus Hawthorne, acknowledged by the Ventura STAR as the finest game in County history, the Panthers won the championship.

He has been selected Marmonte League Coach of the Year nine times, County Coach of the Year five times, L.A. TIMES area Coach of the Year twice and the National Football League Coach of the Year in 1998.

He initiated some of the first “out-of-State” Football trips, playing and hosting teams from Arizona, Hawaii and Oregon.

His greatest accomplishment may have been innovation of the Marmonte League so-called passing circus” in the 1990s when scores went from a three point differential to games where both teams would put more than fifty points on the board. He also expanded the summer league passing program from its infancy to being a major component of all county high school Football off season preparation. The passing league tournaments now include freshmen and sophomores.

During his career, George played Rugby for twelve years and officiated Track and Field meets from 1979 to the present. In that time, thousands of athletes and scores of coaches have had the good fortune to cross paths with this good natured and affable Ventura County sports leader.

No individual has contributed more to his or her sport than Jim Naylor has to automobile racing. Jim has been recognized within the auto racing community with a number of national awards. In 1991 he was named “Race Organizer of the Year” by the United States Automobile Club. In 1993, USAC also awarded him the Jim Bunk Memorial Award for his devotion to midget racing. He continues to be one of the most sought-after presenters at the Annual Promoters Workshop for Track Operators in Reno every December.

The raceway has brought some of the most successful drivers to Ventura County including Cruz Pedregon, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Billy Boat and Jimmy Sills. But the thing that pleases Jim the most is the way that the track and sheds bring families together.

Naylor has two daughters, Julianne and Laura. He currently lives in Oxnard, California.

Loyola University 1974 – BA Sociology

Jerry was a three year starter in Football, Basketball and Baseball for St. Bonaventure HS. He played both offense and defense as an interior lineman and linebacker. He was also a member of the first Tri Valley League Football championship in 1969.

In Basketball, Jerry averaged double figures in both his junior and senior years.

But it was Baseball that Jerry made his impact as an athlete. As a switch hitting pitcher, Jerry won 24 games leading to St. Bonaventure’s first Baseball Tri-valley League Championship. He was named Tri-Valley League Player of the Year. In the CIF “AA” Playoffs, Jerry pitched all three games and in the Championship Game he threw a 3 hit, 10 strikeout game (3-0). He also had 6 hits in 9 at bats during the playoffs. Jerry was named CIF Player of the Year, the only CIF Player of the Year in Baseball in St. Bonaventure’s school history.

Jerry received a baseball scholarship to Loyola (now Loyola Marymount University University) where he started as a freshman catcher for the Lions. In 1973, the Lions won their first ever West Coast Conference Championship and made their first ever NCAA Playoff appearance. Jerry set records for home runs, RBI’s and doubles for a single season as well as setting career marks at that time. Remarkably he handled 388 chances with no errors for a final fielding percentage of 1.000. He won both All Conference and All American Honors (the first All American Baseball player in Loyola’s history).

He has been inducted in the Lions Hall of Fame and is only one of three Baseball players to have his jersey retired.

Jerry was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round as the 76th player taken. He played his first year in the Northwest League at Walla Walla, WA (A) and was a unanimous pick to the All Star Team leading the league in Home Runs.

The next two years were in the Texas League in Alexandria, Louisiana (AA) and his final two years in the Pacific Coast League with the Hawai’i Islanders (AAA) before retiring after the 1977 season. Jerry currently resides in Westlake Village with Mary, his wife of 35 years.
